A crowd gathered at the Gallery at Heartworks/Inertia at Five Points on Friday, September 29 for local pop artist Mark George’s opening of his new collection of paintings.

This show is a collection of new paintings by George. His paintings of love, anguish, and anxiety spare no emotion and bear no subliminal message.

George’s work demonstrates his commercial art background, graphic design, and the idea of painting with no visible brush strokes, the pieces have a flat color quality seen primarily in printed work.

Painted on torn, oversized, PVC, the paintings are an attempt to embody mid-century Americana in advertising and urban street art. The material gives the work an abandoned quality that suggests the piece is not a painting per se, but a relic or illustrative portion of an old billboard or advertisement.
